Flashback: Fa La La Flamingo Beachmas 2017

Flashback to 2017, our family’s Christmas session was Fa La La Flamingo Beachmas. Honoring our last Christmas in the sunny state, I decided to go with a fun Florida theme. Hawaiian shirts and a retro flamingo dress for my daughter were the perfect fit! I also found a few new accessories to tie in: a flamingo snow globe and a driftwood star.
I photographed my children acting naturally. Of course this approach can be risky. My youngest son almost always hates to take pictures. There might have been a little bribing before-hand. The kids played at the shore and posed for group shots.
They also decorated a pineapple with ornaments and sunglasses. Mr. Pineapple was an excellent alternative to the traditional Christmas tree. (Pinterest idea for the win!) We listened to Oldies on my vintage Sony handheld radio. I love this $5 radio and routinely bring it along all of my outdoor sessions. The sunset at the beach did not disappoint. Gorgeous golden hues filled the sky, it was magical. My daughter skipped and jumped twirling the umbrella I brought along as an extra prop. Instantly, I was drawn to her silhouette. Together, we created this stunning shot.

During sessions, my goal is to capture genuine personalities of everyone photographed. I take my time to let everyone get comfortable. Rushing or skipping this part of the session is not an option. It is my job to tell your family’s story, and I take that responsibility seriously. Luckily for me, I did not have to try hard for this session. My daughter’s outgoing personality shined through. She was a character on and off camera. The proof is in the pudding photos.
After we finished and returned home, I designed a double-sided card to send to family and friends. I love to add my own personal touches to custom cards. For these cards, I added the pop of pink and golden flamingos.
This year’s theme is dedicated to Virginia’s natural landscape. Fall colors are everywhere and beautiful pines stand tall. I can’t wait to share our 2018 Christmas photos with you, very soon! Does your family do something similar? Leave a comment below, and tell me all about it.
